Healthcare Services:
Through the Cardiovascular Research Clinic and the ELSA Project (Longitudinal Study of Adult Health), services are provided by faculty and graduate students from the PPGCF to patients referred for consultations and complementary exams (ECG, Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring, Heart Rate Variability Analysis, Echocardiography, Vascular and Abdominal Ultrasound) at the UFES University Hospital. Approximately 2,500 consultations are conducted annually. In addition to patient care, the clinical data significantly contribute to the scientific production of the PPGCF. For example, the MONICA-WHO/Vitória project, coordinated by Prof. J.G. Mill between 1999-2001, resulted in over 30 publications, most in international journals. The genetic data obtained in this database remains the only representative sample of the general population in Brazil and has served as a comparison for a large number of other studies involving patient subgroups.
In 2006, PPGCF was selected in a Public Notice from Finep (Notice 05/2006) to join a consortium of institutions to conduct the LONGITUDINAL STUDY OF ADULT HEALTH – ELSA-Brasil Project – funded by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science and Technology. This project organized a cohort of 15,000 Brazilian adults who will be followed for a minimum of 15 years (225,000 person-years) to characterize the biological and social determinants of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes in the Brazilian population. The PPGCF research group was chosen for its previously demonstrated capability to conduct research in Cardiovascular Physiology in populations. Thus, these are long-term projects in which PPGCF is involved, aiming to enhance the understanding of health-disease processes in the Brazilian population.
