Sumario: It is estimated that 65 million people live with heart failure (HF), with a survival rate of only 35%. The unfavorable prognosis of HF may be associated with serum calcium and phosphorus levels, exacerbating the typical symptoms of the disease and consequently affecting quality of life. This study aimed to assess risk factors and possible predictors of cardiovascular disease, such as calcium and phosphorus, and their relationship with quality of life in patients undergoing surgical procedures. A negative relationship was observed between quality of life and serum calcium and phosphorus levels. In addition, relationships were identified between cardiovascular events (angina and heart attacks), family history, NYHA classification and individual characteristics (such as marital status, religion, health insurance and gender). There was an improvement in quality of life after surgery, observed 4 months after the procedure. Our results show that the higher the calcium and phosphorus levels, the worse the quality of life scores. However, more studies are needed to determine whether these relations are causal and, if so, to clarify the specific mechanisms involved.
